The programme included visits to Downing Street, Parliament and organisations across Greater Manchester.

Twelve students took part in this year's summer school, which is aimed at young people preparing to move on to higher education, further education or apprenticeships.

The annual programme introduces participants to a range of careers linked to politics, public service, business, the media and community work while helping them develop practical skills and a greater understanding of civic life.

Among this year's highlights were a visit to Number 10 Downing Street, a tour of the BBC offices at MediaCityUK and visits to organisations including Greater Manchester Police in Oldham, Oldham Athletic, Spark Oldham, Northern Roots, Ultimate Products and Aviva Studios.

The programme also included a visit to Parliament. Avanti supported the rail journey to London while the Bee Network supported travel around Oldham and Greater Manchester.

Jim McMahon said, "Thank you to the 12 fantastic young people who attended this year's summer school for the time you gave and the way you engaged with and embraced the opportunity each day.

"We are lucky that our borough and the wider city region have so much to offer to young people, but too many are kept out by not knowing how to get their foot in the door and the contacts needed. That's one of the reasons we try to fill this week each year with a variety of events and visits.

"I really appreciate the organisations who gave time during week to support the summer school including the Oldham GMP team, Ultimate Products, Downing Street, Parliament, the BBC, Oldham Athletic, Spark Oldham, Northern Roots, and Aviva Studios. Thanks also to Avanti for supporting the train journey down to London and the Bee Network for supporting the tram and bus trips around Oldham and Greater Manchester.

"And of course, a thanks to my fantastic constituency office team who made all this happen, it takes a lot of organisation to make it a success. Good luck and best wishes for the future for all who attended."

Mr McMahon said the programme is intended to help young people gain experience of different career paths while encouraging an interest in public service, community activism and civic responsibility.
