Research staff from the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) NHS Group, which includes the Royal Oldham Hospital, began the study into a promising new vaccine against the virus a week ago and have been delighted with the response of the people from the town who have volunteered to take part.

Professor Phil Kalra said: “Its heart warming to see so many participants wanting to take part to help us with this hugely important study.”

“We know with the awful Covid pandemic, the only way we’re going to get out of it is if we find suitable vaccines which prevents disease in the British population so this is a huge step that we’re so delighted to take part in.”

The study, which is being held in Oldham, runs until the 23rd November and those involved hope that as many as 500 people will be able to take part. It will form part of a series of national research projects in bid to try and find a vaccine to treat the virus which, so far, has claimed more than 50,000 lives in the UK alone.
