Officers from Greater Manchester Police's Tactical Aid Unit, and also armed response, were in attendance in relation to an ongoing investigation into robberies in the area.
A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of robbery and two suspected BB guns were located and seized by specialist officers.
A BB gun is a type of air gun designed to shoot metallic spherical projectiles called BBs (not to be confused with similar-looking bearing balls).
Chief Inspector Ian Partington, of GMP’s Oldham District, said: “We understand that this action may have caused some concern in our communities, but we hope that this arrest goes some way in reassuring residents in Oldham that we are tackling these sorts of offences head on."
