The match finished 5-5 before Sheffield won on penalties.

The attendance was described by organisers as a record for an Elite Ice Hockey League pre-season fixture.

It was Manchester Storm's first game at the AO Arena since 2004.

The club returned to the Manchester city centre venue to face Sheffield Steelers, with the sides scoring five goals each before the visitors won the penalty shootout.

Manchester Storm are now set to play around 35 games in the city centre each year.

Gemma Vaughan, general manager at the AO Arena, said: “Tonight is a hugely significant moment for Manchester. To welcome Manchester Storm back to their former home after more than 20 years, and to do so in front of a record Elite Hockey League crowd, is incredibly special.

“The response from supporters has demonstrated the strength of Manchester’s passion for ice hockey and the demand for world-class sport in the city. We’re proud to be able to provide a home for the Storm as they begin this exciting new chapter.”
