Cadets can take part in outdoor and water-based activities while also working towards qualifications and awards.

The unit, based in Yates Street, Derker, offers activities including sailing, kayaking, rowing, paddleboarding, camping, navigation, first aid, communications and fieldcraft.

Young people can also work towards the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, BTEC qualifications, Arts Award and the Young Leaders Award.

The unit said these programmes can help cadets develop skills in leadership, teamwork, communication and organisation.

Petty Officer (SCC) Daniel Angle, commanding officer of Oldham Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets, said: “What we offer young people goes far beyond simply turning up in uniform. We want our cadets to leave us with experiences, qualifications, confidence and skills that they can use throughout their lives.

“Whether someone wants to work towards their Duke of Edinburgh's Award, gain a BTEC, explore their creative side through Arts Award, develop as a Young Leader or simply try something completely new, there are opportunities for them to grow and achieve.

“We’re particularly proud of the fact that cadets can develop at their own pace. They can challenge themselves, discover new interests, make lifelong friends and gain experiences that can really help them stand out when applying for college, university, apprenticeships or employment.”

Royal Marines Cadets can take part in activities based around the traditions and ethos of the Royal Marines, including teamwork, fieldcraft, navigation, fitness and leadership.

The unit also provides opportunities linked to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

These include activities involving navigation, communications, engineering, technology and maritime subjects.

Mr Angle added: “We believe every young person has potential, and our job is to help them discover it. Whether they join because they want adventure, qualifications, leadership experience, new friends or simply something positive to do each week, we want them to have the opportunity to achieve something they can be proud of.”

Oldham Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets meet at Yates Street, Derker, OL1 4AP, on Mondays and Thursdays from 7.15pm to 9.30pm.
