REEL CIC has agreed to work with Endometriosis Awareness North on its campaign for centres providing diagnosis, treatment and support for women with the condition.

The partnership was formed following a women's health and wellbeing event at Nelson Way Community Centre in Chadderton.

Endometriosis Awareness North wants specialist clinics where services including scans and mental health support could be provided.

The charity says there are currently no equivalent specialist endometriosis centres in the UK, despite the condition affecting one in ten women of childbearing age.

It compared the provision with specialist services available for conditions including stroke and diabetes.

Dr Anita Sharma, founder of Endometriosis Awareness North, said: “Women deserve timely diagnosis, compassionate care, and specialist support. We won’t stop until that becomes the norm – and we now have a superb ally in REEL CIC.

“Community partnerships like this are how real change begins.”

REEL CIC works with communities in Oldham on issues including domestic violence and women's health.

Its director of engagement, Charlene Burns, attended the event where Endometriosis Awareness North discussed the impact of the condition and difficulties women can face when seeking a diagnosis.

The charity also announced that it plans to present evidence about what it describes as a North-South divide in endometriosis care at the House of Commons in October.

Dr Sharma added: “If we look at diabetes clinics, they offer bespoke check-ups, specialist advice, education and support groups, plus regular appointments delivered by nurses, dietitians, and specialists, to ensure comprehensive care.

“We need that same approach with endo. Surely it beats endless visits to the GP and Accident and Emergency, and years of waiting in agonising pain for a proper diagnosis.”
